What’s included? This download includes one resource - two pages featuring x12 ‘half’ problems (using fruit/veg) to complete - each of the x12 questions involves sharing the total amount (from 1 to 12) into two equal groups - or ‘halves’. The learner will discover which numbers between 1 and 12 can and cannot be halved and of those numbers which can be halved equally learners will identify how much ‘half’ is. Resource layout The learner can draw a line from each fruit/veg to each ‘plate’ pictured below to systematically share out the total number of items (fruit/veg) each time until all have been shared (or not!) I find it helpful for learners to say out loud “One for you and one for me” as each item is being shared/distributed to each plate either physically or as the line is being drawn linking the fruit/veg to each plate, every time. Where the total number is ‘even’ (and the fruit/veg can be shared out equally) the learner can write the number of fruit/veg on one plate (the ‘half’ amount) on the line underneath at the end of the question (e.g.) 'Half of 2 is 4 For the even numbers (which can successfully be split equally into half!) the learner can ‘circle’ the green ‘tick’ displayed, for the odd numbers (which cannot be shared equally into half!) the learner can ‘circle’ the red ‘cross’ displayed before moving on to the next question. At the end of the second sheet there are x12 matching questions about each individual number to recap on which of the numbers between 1 and 12 can/cannot be split equally into half. The colour of the box around each question correlates to the colour of the question completed above guiding the learner more clearly (visually) back to each question box above to check their finding if needed. There is also a space to write those numbers which can be split equally into half together (the even numbers!) and those which cannot be split equally into half can be written together (the odd numbers!). The questions in all boxes have been designed to look the same in order that the learner can make the discovery that ‘even’ numbers can be shared into two equal 'halves’ (and odd numbers cannot!) for themselves. Once complete this resource makes a useful reference tool to refer back to as needed to assist young learners during various maths linked activities. These ‘number bonds’ have been carefully designed for early years and pupils as well as students needing additional learning support. This resource has been designed around ‘diggers’ with 'vehicle lovers’ in mind as to motivate our learners linking to personal interests wherever possible can be a powerful way to inspire and engage. Resource layout Page 1 On the left the learner is to match the number on the top of the digger with the matching number of rocks (towards the centre line) - drawing a line (from the ‘hole’ dots) to connect each number bond pair which makes 5. On the right the learner is to match the number on the top of the digger with the number of cones (towards the centre line) which - together - make a total of five. Page 2 Shows all number bonds matched (the answers) clearly displayed in the same layout for easy comparison and quick reference. The simple lay out of each doubles sum is an easy to use resource. This resource has been designed for early years and Year 1 pupils as well as perhaps some children in year two or students needing additional learning support. This resource has been designed around a ‘postal’ theme with 'vehicle lovers’ in mind as to motivate our learners linking to personal interests and real life experiences wherever possible can be a powerful way to inspire and engage. In the middle and lower section are two rows of five postal vans, each with a number and that same number of letters (envelopes). Pages 2 to 4 (numbered 1-3) provide practical opportunity for learners to use the images of the rulers provided to carefully measure the length of each object (image) featured. Page number 1 focuses on ‘stationery’, page number 2 on ‘kitchen items’ and page number 3 on ‘tools’. Page 3 uses the vocabulary ‘longer’ and ‘shorter’ and looks at the difference (in cm) between the longest and shortest tool - which may be a new concept for some learners and so may require some support. Suggestion I would encourage learners to draw a vertical line from the end of each object to the number on the ruler above (using a pencil and ruler!) to be sure of what the total length for each item is. Resource Details There are x7 sheets in total. Two sets of x3 - a colour and black and white version of the same resource plus a sheet of ‘paper Skittles’ to cut up and sort/count (if you don’t want to risk your learners eating their learning!) This activity is organised around one random amount (portion) of Skittles - each learner will need their own portion. Learners could be given a real Skittles or ‘paper/cardboard Skittles’. On the bar chart there is space for up to x24 Skittles of one colour so the amount of Skittles given to learners can be any number to fit their ability, however no more than x24 of any one colour group if you intend for learners to use the bar chart (pages 3/5). Page 1 Learners are to sort their portion of Skittles into x5 colour groups (red, orange, yellow, green and purple). Learners then count the number of Skittles in each group and write the total in each colour group ‘total’ box. Page 2 Using the information recorded on page 1 learners then transfer this information to the simple, clear bar chart. Resource Details There are x2 stages to this activity, going out (always with an adult!) to count vehicles for an agreed amount of time and transferring the information collected onto a block diagram. Page 1 Learners are to count the number of vehicles observed passing along a road (from a safe distance and always with adult supervision!) The types of vehicles included on the recording sheet are cars, vans, buses, trucks/lorries, bicycles, motorbikes, pedestrians. There is a space to add another type of traffic in the lowest box. This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource details This activity has been designed to write straight on. Each page clearly features ten robots with ten recap questions at the end. Each robot’s chest clearly shows one part of each double (in ‘dots’) in order/random order up to 10. Learners complete the other half (of each double) by drawing ‘dots’ e.g. with a thick felt pen onto the space on the right side of each robot’s chest. Learners then write the total number of dots on the line underneath to complete the sentence e.g. ‘Double 1 is 2.’ The robots and questions are both in order and random order - you choose which to use depending on what best suits the needs of your learner/s. Size 16/17 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font makes the text easy to read and clearly models the process of doubling numbers to 10 to young learners. This resource has been designed for pupils in the early years, years one and two as well as older students who would benefit from investigating the concept of ‘symmetry’ and ‘symmetrical’ or students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to encourage learners to investigate the lines of symmetry for all x26 capital letters of the alphabet! How to use it? The resource has been designed for learners to investigate the lines of symmetry by first cutting around each capital letter to investigate one letter at a time. It is best to begin by folding letters and cutting once learners are sure they have found a solid line of symmetry. A (safety!) mirror could be helpful as a back up to check (especially if letters have already been cut up!) Resource Details… Learners will need a pair of scissors each to begin this activity. Page 1. At the top are ‘larger’ capital letters, each within a dotted box - these dots guide where to cut. Learners can cut out one of these larger letters at a time (to avoid having lots of letters in front of them at once and risk losing some). Learners will need a pair of scissors each to begin this activity. Along the length of base side of the sheet is a set of smaller capital letters designed to be cut with two simple snips (vertically up to the red line and then horizontally) to separate these from the sheet one at a time. These are designed to be used to record findings (answers) - on page 2. The larger capital letters can go into the bin after they have been cut up, folded and investigated. Page 2. Learners will need a pencil to their write their name at the base of page 2 and access to a glue stick to continue their investigation using page 2.
